Have you ever been closer to God than you are right now?

Have you ever been closer to God than you are right now?
I was recently challenged with this question by a friend and mentor of mine. Before I start planning any events for kids, training for leaders, or whatever else might go into the ministry I lead, I have to make sure that my relationship with God is in the right place.
If I’ve ever been closer to God than I am right now, first of all I need to admit that and ask His forgiveness. Then I need to do whatever it takes to spend time with God daily both in his Word and in prayer. There is an intimacy with God that only happens through a daily ‘quiet time’ with Him. In times of my life where I’ve gotten away from that, my relationship with God has suffered, and so has everything else in my life as a result. Obviously there are times that God may feel distant, when we’re going through troubles or maybe for another reason, but God is always right there with us and for us. If I’m not as close to God as ever, then I’m the only one to blame.
Let me encourage you to ask yourself the same question I was asked: “Has there ever been a time in your life that you were closer to God than you are right now?” If the answer’s yes, ask God’s forgiveness and make it a point to spend time with him each day. I like to keep it real simple: Spend some time in prayer, and work through a book, concentrating on a particular passage and what God is saying through it. If you need some help getting started, let me know, I'm certainly not perfect, but I’d be happy to help!

Encourage and be encouraged

Another thing I see in Paul in Romans 1:9-12 is that he 'longed' for the opportunity to encourage others. I believe this, along with sharing the Gospel, was one of his top priorities. This is an area where I would love to be like Paul. With the great group of people we've got involved in the Children's Ministry at our church, one of the goals I have is for us to be a force of encouragement for each other. I pray that God will use me to be an encouragement to you, and every time I get to be around our leaders, I end up being encouraged as well. Encourage others, and you yourself will be encouraged!
